Congratulations to Mrs. Fawn Filippis (and NHS senior Larissa Stull) for being honored at the Newcomerstown Chamber of Commerce banquet on October 17, 2024. Mrs. Filippis was selected as the Newcomerstown Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year.
Mrs. Filippis has been a valued member of the West Elementary staff for over 23 years. She currently teaches Ohio History to 4th graders. She is an excellent teacher- always striving to make her lessons engaging and fun. She never stops trying new things with her students. What stands out most about her, though, is her ability to build relationships with kids. Every student who walks through her classroom door knows without a doubt that she cares about them. Even the troubled ones. Especially the troubled ones. Mrs. Filippis has learned that in order for some students to learn- they must have other needs met first. Oftentimes these are needs that aren’t getting met elsewhere. Students must feel safe and they must feel loved. And Mrs. Filippis works to make sure her students feel safe and loved. She is patient and kind. She holds students to high expectations but knows when to give a little grace. She makes learning fun, and she has fun with her students. She is so deserving of this recognition and I am proud to work alongside her every day.
